The National Football League commenced another season of football on September 5, when the Denver Broncos squared off against the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. The game was close at half until Peyton Manning took over. Manning through seven touchdown passes to complete an opening night route. Since that first game, the season has been anything but predictable. Take the NFC East, for example. Many people predicted a similar finish to what was seen last year. The Washington Redskins, with a repaired RG3, would win another title. The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants might battle for a wild card while the Philadelphia Eagles would rebuild. That has not been the case. The Redskins have dummied down their offense, perhaps to protect RG3. The results have been a bland attack, which has been blown out of games by halftime. Their defense can stop nothing. The New York Giants have not been much better, leaving both teams 0-2 to start the season. They are lucky they are in the NFC Least because no team has more than one win. There are other surprises afoot, as well. Who had the Kansas City Chiefs matching their 2012 win total in the first two weeks? Well, new coach Andy Reid is getting buy in from his players, and the result is a 2-0 start. The first win, a blowout over Jacksonville, was not that impressive. However, beating the Dallas Cowboys in week two could be a sign of great things to come. Will they overtake Denver? Probably not, but they could contend for a wild card. Another surprise, but going the wrong way, would be the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steeler offense has been nothing short of a disaster. They cannot sustain a rushing attack, which has left Ben Roethlisberger running for his life each week. The defense has been okay, but when the offense cannot score, it leads to their present 0-2 record. Going into the season, it looked like the New England Patriots would have another cakewalk to a division title. Two weeks in the Miami Dolphins might have something to say about that. The team is off to a 2-0 start, with a big win in week 2. They went into Lucas Oil Stadium and upset the Indianapolis Colts. It is early, but Miami looks solid on both sides of the ball. In terms of individual performances, it is hard not to look at Peyton Manning. Seven touchdown passes in a week is astounding, but nine on the season with no interceptions are MVP like. Aaron Rodgers is also off to a fast start, leading the league in passing yards. Anyone who has looked at the Eagles’ offense should not be surprised that the Chip Kelly attack has the top rusher and receiver in the league (LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson). Mario Williams is living up to his huge free agent contract, leading the league with 4.5 sacks. His rookie teammate, E.J. Manuel, is also worthy of mention. He led his team to a last second victory over Carolina in week 2, while he almost upset the Patriots in week 1.
